HURRICANE INSURANCE

Helping people feel confident that they’re covered and will be compensated

Over and over in the aftermath of the 2004 hurricanes, victims of Hurricane Charley, Frances, Jeanne and Ivan would tell me such frustrating and heartbreaking stories – stories of paying not one but two high deductibles, stories of being dropped by their insurers after many years of no claims, stories of property values that had fallen through the floor while taxes were going through the roof.

I vowed to work as hard as I could to reform hurricane insurance policy in Florida and wherever possible, to provide financial relief to homeowners impacted by the storms.

We’ve already made changes to:

  • Outlaw double deductibles
  • Require speedy claims processing
  • Property tax relief for displaced hurricane victims
  • "Truth In Coverage" so homeowners know exactly what they've paid for

Still, much more remains to be done

  • Hold BIG INSURERS accountable to policyholders
  • Standardize risk models so customers are not overcharged
  • Force insurers to pass cost savings to customers
  • Enact a HOMEOWNERS BILL OF RIGHTS to protect Floridians from rising property taxes and skyrocketing insurance premiums
  • Prosecute insurers who skirt the law and use loopholes to pad corporate profits at the expense of policy holders
